Good night and good luck

This is the a class blog for Introduction to Political Science 110, Spring 02008, the University of Hawai'i at Manoa. It is now closed, but will remain online as an archive of our semester's journey.

Just as I asked my students to produce a Reflections paper at the end of our class, now that the summer is over I've made the time to post reflections of my own over at the sceptical futuryst. The post is aimed at anyone who may be interested -- futures studies and design educators in particular -- to learn from the experiment in future-jamming that we carried out together for the class.

Congratulations again, both to my students -- you guys were great -- and to our collaborators in the art class with which we worked, Beginning Digital Imaging 400, led by the exceptional Mr Scott Groeniger. I learned a great deal from you all.

media continuation installment

Alright so our power point didn't exactly worked out the way we hoped, but none the less props should go to Minho for putting it all together at the last minute.  Anyways, so our group did the media continuation future and over all I think it worked out quite well.  Granted we had a bit of a rough start in the beginning, we were still able to get this project off the ground and installed out in the public.  Like I've said in class, we had minimal interactions with the posters so I wasn't able to get anyone's reaction to them.  Also Claire from the art class took several photos of the installation, but it's unfortunate that she came down with a cold and wasn't able to get us the pictures in time.  Our original idea was to get a vending machine so that we could dispense the "pills" (Tic Tacs), but we didn't have to time to pull off the stunt.  Our back up idea was to maybe go over to the bookstore and just swap out their tic tacs for ours if they had, but again we didn't have the time to pull off that stunt either.

Overall I really liked this experiment.  Not only did it really open my eyes to how the future could possibly be, but I believe that this was certainly a once in a lifetime experience for many of us to actually be a part of something like this.  I wished I could post up more pics of the project, but like I've said before it's unfortunate that Claire came down with a cold.  However, if I remember to, I'll gladly post up the pictures later on this blog! Good job everyone on their projects!

the presentations were exciting. It was nice to see how far some groups took the project. ePaint was actually the most interesting to me because of how tangible the scenario seemed. My second favorite group was the magnets. I thought the magnets were a great idea and people couldn't really just walk past it without reading what it was about. as far as the group work goes..i didnt really like it all that much; i think mostly because the groups were so big it was hard to rally that many people to focus on getting the project done. I like the idea of combining with an art class, but i didnt really like the large size of the group and the fact that it was hard to get the art class to understand the focus of the project and not go off on tangents.

It was cool to be able to see everyone's projects at the same time. Each group did a good job at trying to represent their scenarios and also at installing them throughout campus. For our project's installation and data gathering, it was kinda hard since not many people looked at our posters. I dunno if they weren't eye-catching or people thought they were some kind of advertisement. Another hardship that we had during installation, was the scotch tape that we bought from the bookstore, it didn't stick. We used many pieces of tape and it just wouldn't stick. I was happy how the posters and fliers turned out and i wanna thank Cari and Bobby for the wonderful job they did on them and also want to thank Hannah for all her hard work too.

4/18/08

Power Point Presentations of all the groups were amazing. I thought I put lots of effort in mine even with very limited source at the time, but some of the group's PP presentation was just so good that I felt bad. This collaboration with Art class students was awesome. I never knew that Art students will have so much to say about Politics or future or anything like that. Not only were they good at making things artistically pleasing to our eyes but they were very smart in general knowledge. Our group's presentation was really good in a sense that we had to improvise the whole thing because my powe point presentation didn't show up on the computer because the power point I used was the newest version. I thought I was in trouble but everybody in the group knew what we are suppose to be talking about so everything went smoothly. All in all it was really good stuff we did and I enjoyed it a lot.

Minute Paper 4/17

One thing interesting I noticed about many of the presentations is how far all of the final products seemed to be from their initial topic and path, such as the China focused media scenario just using the communications to the mainland being cut off as the starting point. The project that really stood out most to me was the media discipline in which the government rationed media access based on health. It surprised me how many people seemed to be reacting with the belief that it was somehow scary or too much control, while to me it seemed like the best idea I have ever heard to cure the obesity problem in the US. Of course I feel probably the most important moment in today's class was the look on the face of the arts class teacher when he saw the location that one poster had been place, specifically within the poster stand. It was particularly funny for me because both at the time and in the presentation in class, the other group members mocked me for specifically making sure to distance myself from that placement, and effectively be not part of that placement. It seems that in retrospect my instinct was correct that something about that placement was a bad idea.

Minute Paper for 4/17

Today's class consisted of presentations of our future artifacts.  The presentation that I most liked was ePaint because they seemed to do a lot of researching into their topic, which got them all passionate, and it was just great.  I thought media discipline had really realistic looking graphics, and it's amazing she drew most of them.  The Mad Man Max group was pretty good because they has the magnets, which I thought was a very effective way to shock people or just get their attention.  Plus, it helped that David was on the school paper and was able to get a little story published about them.  Unfortunately, most groups' postings weren't able to stay up long enough for many people to take much interest in them, but overall I think everybody did a great job! Those graphics students are amazing, you just pitch a graphic idea to them and it's done within the class period, like riding a bike for them.  So thanks very much to Nick and Mike for making our project breezy.

Media Discipline Photos/Slides/Poster

These are a couple of the slides from our PowerPoint, one of our posters (I wanted to post both of them but unfortunatly I only had this one on my computer), and a few of the photos we took outside Campus Center.

Minute Paper (04-17-08)

So, today was very exciting and interesting after two weeks of collaboration with the Art students and all the hard work were lay out based on the different work produced by each group. I felt overwhelmed by listening to all the very educational and some bizarre artifacts by other groups like the Dream pill. It looks realistic and imagine having an actual vending machine, I think I would actually give it a try. And working with the Art students we both learned from each other. The Art students with their special talents on producing fascinating imaging and our idea about the scenarios based on the different futures we encountered in our scenario. I also think hands down, everyone did a great job somehow. Another idea that got my attention has to do with the blood sample ATM. They got their idea going very well and to me it is well put out and the power point looks official. Overall, every groups have interesting idea at one point going along with there scenario.Good job everyone! Now that this is finish our upcoming presentations should be very entertaining too.

minute paper 4-17

Today's class was probably the most exciting class of all. I really enjoyed watching everyone present their projects to the rest of the class and explain their artifacts. It was nice to finally see everything come together after trying to sneak peaks at little bits of projects here and there. I must say, everyone did a fantastic job with everything and everyones ideas were creative and original. The e-paint project was very intriguing to me for the fact that that type of work is already in the making. It seems so futuristic, yet its right around the corner.
It was a blast working with the lovely and talented art students. They were great at interpreting ideas and conveying them through the art work. They made everything that much more realistic.

Media Transformation

Here's a little picture trail history of what our group media transformation went through as we put forth our work for the public to see.

Minute Paper 4/17

Wow, very impressive everyone. All of the projects presented where both original and, considering the short amount of time we actually had to work, really professional. I was particularly impressed by the multi-media approach many of the groups took, with everything from magnets, blogs, posters, business cards, websites, and video/PowerPoint used. I would also like to say that I’m really proud of the way my group persevered through some really serious problems. Whether it was campus center changing their minds and taking away our TV, the fact that we where constantly forced to work with only two or three of us present, or it was equipment problems like adapters not working or our camera dieing within the first minutes after setting up our project we always found a way to make it happen, adjusting to our problems and getting right back to work. In conclusion it has been an honor to work with both the art students and all of you, and it has been a privilege to have been part of this project.

i was extremely impressed with every group in class today!  everyone did an amazing job; the posters, fliers, websites etc came out looking so great (very professional looking!).  we are really lucky that we got to work with the art students.

one of my favorite installations was the idream pill vending machine.  i would have never thought of that.  i'm sure tons of people stopped & looked at that poster & wondered what it was.  it was really eye catching and official looking.

Minute Paper 4/17/08

Today's class was really interesting to see all of the groups' future jamming projects. I must say that all of the groups did really amazing jobs in creating detailed posters or websites. With the help of the ART students all of our groups were able to put our unique ideas in very creative graphics. I thought the group who did the energy Mad Man Max stickers were really good in coming up with an idea that could catch a widespread audience. I really enjoyed joining classes with the ART class not only because we were able to put our creative together, but also because of the fact that we got to meet new people.

04.17.08

so today we got to see all of the completed projects, and i must say
that it made me very proud to be a part of this class and our future
jamming process. i was very impressed by different ideas and means used
to catch the attention of the general public, and i can say without a
doubt that our projects have definitely left an impact on a significant
number of people. my favorite project by far was Finneman Universal and
their "device free" concept. i thought that business card was very,
very effective and aesthiccally pleasing, it defintely looked ligit.
Thhe fact that it was practically text free definitely left a lot of
room for curiosty and interest, and i found it very compelling; it
looked very professional. I also thought it was genius to make it on a
business card because this allowed for the production of many, which
enabled them to reach more people. the website was also very well put
together and came out very nicely, and all in all i thought the whole
thing was very well thought out, from the logo creation to execution.
While this was my personal favorite, i think that every group had their
strong points and things that made thier project unique and powerful.

04.15.08

(i'm sorry this is so late, it's tuesday's blog)

i thought my group and i would have to spend today making our magnets,
however, when i got to class i was delighted to learn that the art
students had already finsihed making them. that definitely saved us so
much time, and allowed us to get started on installation right away. i
had a wonderful time distributing aftifacts from our future around
campus. It was exciting to know that everything came together quite
seemlessly, and now was our chance to really reach the general public.
we were able to put almost all of our magnets on cars, only saving a
few for ourselves and the presentation. in the beginning we were more
focused on putting them on cars that consume more gas, like big trucks
and SUV's, but after awhile i started putting them on any car because i
thought that limiting our intending population would definitely bias
our results. David, on of our art students, works for Ka Leo and so we
went and talked to the editor and she loved the idea of featuring a
picture of our installation process in thursdays edition. i was really
excited about it because i know that our project would catch the
attention of a much wider audience then it would have otherwise. all in
all, it was a very successull day.

Today

Today's class was really fun, I enjoyed seeing everyone Else's projects and ideas. I especially liked the gas one. Mainly because that seems so realistic to me , the last drop of gas could happen in our lifetimes and we really have no idea. not only because of the limited supply but because of the increasing prices. I thought all the projects were put together nicely and it shows allot of creativity in our classes, I mean we did come up with those ideas just from an idea/situation. With all the work that went into the projects they all were great. Good job everyone. see you on Tuesday.

minut paper 4-17-08

Today in class we went over our projects, and presented them to the rest of the class. We talked about where the artifact installations went, and where they were most effective. The most intriguing presentation was that of energy transformation i believe it was. The one with the ePaint. I am extremely interested in alternative energy, and always have been. I am definitely going to do some follow upon this technology. I would love to find out how to make this product, or at least the science behind how they work. This technology is great, however, we all know that oil companies are filthy rich and ideas like this are continually silenced. So even if this technology does come to light, it will not make energy any cheaper but it will make for clean green energy.

One minute paper 4/17

In todays class we got to present our projects that we were working on.  I was very impressed with everyones project.  It was cool to see what others did and the approach that they took to get the project done and to get it out in society.  I had a really fun time doing this project because i felt like i had a little impact on society.  I really enjoyed doing this project and thought it was a very fun and important project to do.

istalation minute paper

we finally got to see everyones projects! they were all super cool and
amazing. The work was great. Good job everyone. Im glad we had that
experience of future jamming.
Attached here are some pictures of the project.

4/17/08

Today was ok but i feel i did not get to contribute artistically to our project. i felt we should have made the pictures  look more physical but whatever. The future will be determined by our generation   and that is a little scary for some but ideal for most. we all must stand up for what we believe in and not take anything for granted.  Some people like to talk about doing things, other than really doing them . A person is a good as the words that they speak, and it is always neccessary to stay true to your word to the second unless unstoppable forces keep you from choosing your path. which in that case dont ever give up and dont ever loose sight of the future changes you want to make.

Minute paper 4/16

Sorry this is a little late.

Unfortunatly there isn't to much to report on today, our printing ended up consuming our entire class time forcing us to postpone going public, but we plan to be up and running Thursday morning.

Installation time?

Ok so today was supposed to be our day to install our projects and
observe..unfortunately we weren't able to get that far into the process
since we were prepping the posters and such. However looking at the
posters today, I'm sure we will get some crazy attractions. I'm hoping
that the pills will pull through later too so that we will have
something else to give out. Look out for our posters everyone! Dream

Minute Paper 4/15

Discussion of the end of the semester projects for the class really got me thinking about some of what we actually have learned this semester. More importantly, it seems quite challenging to decide which of the many things discussed are important enough to merit mention in our meager ten minute presentation. The most logical subject seems of course to be the various futures, whether by focusing on one topic and many futures, or one model, and several topics. However, I find myself hesitant to choose that path, if only for fear of following to closely in the path of previous projects, via presenting a future in the form of an acted scene, skit, or series of such.
The thing that particularly stood out to me in the class proper once we reunited with the art class was how far we had traveled from out initial ideas of the project, focusing on traffic and highways, to wending back to energy and on into nuclear energy, finally coming once more into the domain of cars by virtue of the concept of the nuclear car.

Minute paper (4-15-08)

The day we have all been waiting for the Installation Day. It all comes down today the hard work put in the art students and our class idea as molded into an artifacts to get conceptual idea of how media looks like in a collapse society. The posters were very highly effective and good way of propaganda getting the media idea out fast. Also, our second scenario includes the surf board, candles and leis. First we install our posters and the surf board in Campus Center until some lady told us to take it down and moved it. Then we moved to the Art building where there were none people interested about it because of the location. There a lot of other posters already at the Art building. We took some pictures when we installed our artifact and gather all the pictures and send it to one person to work on putting together the presentation for our power point on Thursday.

minute paper 4/15

Yay for installation day! Today was pretty fun walking around and watching our project come to life. Although we had to put our posters up during the evening rather than during class, it was still fun. One of my favorite parts of putting up our posters was vandalizing them. haha. Yep, there's nothing like defacing your own hard work. I noticed that, even though we were putting our posters up at a time when there weren't too many people walking around, we still got some strange looks. I wish i could have gotten a picture of this old guy walking by as Andrew was stapling our foreign documentary poster up... classic. I noticed some of the other groups artifacts posted around campus. I even fell for one of them without thinking... i believe it was the e-paint poster. Of course I had to laugh at myself once I realized it was one of my classmate's creations.

minute paper [15 apr]

Today was installation day.  We had a lot of fun walking around campus installing.. it was great to see the project come together!  I don't think we thought it would turn out as cool as it did.  I am eager to see how many hits and emails we will get at our website.
I think this was a great project; I enjoyed working with the art students!  After class, I saw a few installations from other groups on cars in the parking lot.  I'm looking forward to seeing what the other groups did.

today was the installation. Matt and I went around campus and posted up
our ePAINT fliers. Bronsan and Rick did a great job on them, they
really stand out. We got them in some great places so check them out
and be sure to call!

Minute Paper 4/15

Today we finished making the project and are now ready to present it in
public. Some of the other groups put their projects in action today and
it was cool to hear what people on campus had to say about them. I am
excited to put our project in action and see what the results of it are.

4-15-08

Today in class we first met to discuss the remaining schedule for this class. Then we met with the art students and went to go install our artifact around campus. We first went to the campus center, and captured about 15 photos in 2 or 3 minutes, until some student made us take it down. She said we had to blow out the candles and take the poster off the wall. So we went to the art building, and set up again, but not many people were interested. I wish we would have had a timer on the first set up, so we could have cold hard scientific data of how long it might take for a posted piece of media to get noticed by "the authorities."

4/15 one minute paper

In todays class we actually got to put out our project into the public.  It was a really fun experience because we got to put our product in funny places and it is interesting to see how some kids actually found what we were doing was cool.  A couple students kept asking questions like where do i go to see this website and stuff like that it was just really rewarding to hear that from some students.  It is going to be interesting and fun to see what everyone else did in class on thursday.

4/10 minute paper

Today in class my group pretty much just finalized are project.  I am really happy with what we are doing it seems like it is going to be a very cool project.  We got out website up and running and it amazes me what the computer guys in our group can do.  They are pretty amazing with all the computer stuff.  All in all i cant wait to present our project because i feel that we did a very good job.

Minute Paper (4-10-08)

The last day of production week. A lot have accomplished for our group's artifact, the only part now is to display and get the different audiences reaction and analysis. The last minute cramming and reviewing of what we are going to put out was all done today. Our group went over what we are basically doing and how our posters, flyer and the surf board picture lays out. We also identify the people responsible for each artifact and who will be taking the pictures. Also, after our display who will be sending the pictures to so that person can work on the power-point presentation on Thursday. It's all going to come down when all group display their artifact and the possibility each futures scenario captures someone's attention. Good luck everyone!

minute paper 4/10

Today's class was somewhat productive. It was nice to get our website idea squared away and add some finishing touches to the movie poster we have been working on. Although, I believe the two of my group members stayed a little while longer after class to work on our posters, I trust that both of them will have me impressed the next time we meet. It's very reassuring that I can fully have faith in them when I'm not able to be there to express my ideas. It seems as though we all agree easily and, generally, bring similar great ideas to the table. I still can't wait to share our different artifacts and ideas to everyone.

Minute Paper 4/10

I had been worried at first that it seemed like we were going to have trouble with this project. Not because we didn't have any ideas, or a good idea, but instead we had too many ideas we liked, and too few people to enact them. Further, the two directions we seemed to be going in caused me to wonder if somehow we would end up with two completely unrelated projects. But it seems that we will actually be able to accomplish the project, with both our ideas for posters coming together just as had been hoped. This will then leave us with very little left to accomplish, and time already scheduled with the group to meet outside of class to finish the remaining elements. And as one might guess...with this being another workday, I have little to say other that reporting how the progress is going.

Andrew

Minute Paper 4/10

In class today, my group and I were able to finish our project and I have to say that it looks well done. I do also have to thank Cari for such a wonderful job on the posters and on the flier. We should be putting them up on tuesday and taking some photos with them and asking people what they think of them as well. Enjoy your weekend everyone.

04/10/08

today during class, We finished plan for EVERYTHING. All we need to do is to put all the stuff we planned into an action. We decided to print a sticker and wrap it over the tic-tac boxes and give it out as a dream pill. We got the posters and stuff to post it over the campus to make people get interested in the project we are doing and take pictures of people interacting with it. I think we will do well because everyone is taking this serious and We all wanna make sure we get a good experience out of it.

04/08/08

During the Tuesday class, my group went through a several changes to make things more realistic and achievable with a limited resouces that was available to us. While we were at the computer lab, we went on to work on the posters and everything. I think our group's topic, media's role in future is really something we need to think about because big chunk of our society now revolves around media and it's related fields. If it changes drastically it could change lots of the ways of life for many people. So we are trying hard to portray what we came up with and everything. I just felt like I couldn't do much to help the art students because everything was so techie and stuff. I think my idea of connecting Media and Dream was really good. lol It's just what I think.

Minute Paper 4/10

First of all let me just say that words cannot express how thankful I am that we have the art students helping us. I for one would not have been able to create anything close to the quality of production that the digital artists in my group have used in bring to life our ideas. Now, from today’s class there isn’t too much to report. Basically today was spent picking up where we left off from last class, finalizing the layout for our PowerPoint and working on designing our posters. Overall I’m really happy with how our project has evolved, starting as something that I had serious doubts about and blooming into a project that I think myself and my group members will be proud of.

Mark Alexander

minute paper 4-10-08

Today in class we got together in our groups again, and started tying up all looses ends. We discussed where we were going to install our future artifacts. We decided that 20 of each of our two posters all around campus. We also have a dramatic setting from the future which we will set up at various locations around campus fishing for the right impact and some snapshots. I see that some people are having trouble in their groups, and i don't feel that way at all about my group, we are on the right path heading towards a defiite goal and each of us are greatly enthusiastically contributing the established final product.

I came to class and continued work on our project for the discipline of
energy. I'm writing the text for the website. I am basically carrying
my group. If I wasn't there they would fail.

04.10.08

in today's class we didn't get as much done as i would have liked. one
of our artifacts is a magnet, and on this magnet we wanted to include a
web address so that the people who receive our magnets could find out
more information about our project and sceanrio. we already had the
website and the design for the magnet made, we just needed to find a
way to post our stie up on the web which is what we spent most of
todays class doing. because of this we weren't really able to do much
production today, however we already have all of our supplies and we
did a test run with the printer. now all we have left to do is add some
text to the website, assemble the magnets and then distribute them, as
well as some preparation for our presentation. One of our group members
has also decided to take it upon himself to create a short commercial
for our fictional business (much love to Adam :o), so if all goes well
that will be posted on our website also. i'm really looking forward to
actually putting the magnets on cars, and seeing what kind of response
we get. im going to put my email address on the website so that if
anyone has comments or wants to respond they'll have a way to do so.
i'm really enjoying this opportunity to engage the other people in what
we've been learning and i think it's awesome that all of our groups get
to go public with their ideas.

minute 4/8

Today's class was somewhat productive. Not as productive as I had hope; but productive. It was a little hard and uncomfortable to work in a very cramped space but, you gotta do what you gotta do. I like a lot of the ideas that we came up with today in addition to some of the ideas we had in the previous class. I think that the foreign documentary poster is going to turn out great, along with our logo poster, or advertisement, if you will. I'm really excited to see how everything turns out, and can't wait to present our creations.

Minute Paper 4/8

I find myself at somewhat of a loss for what to say about class today, in consideration of the fact that we spent most of the day working on previously developed ideas for the project. One thing I noticed was that little bits of conversations that I caught going on about the class kept on inspiring ideas about other artifacts that could be created, or ways to accomplish ideas that we had thought of previously. One idea in particular that caught my mind was someone bringing up sticker creation, connecting to an idea we had had regarding the creation of bottles of a fake medications as an easy way to produce the effect.
One thought occurred to me about how to improve the project if it is to be continued in subsequent semesters. I found in class today that is was somewhat challenging to work in the room due to both crowding and noise concerns. It seems that, if either a larger or second computer room were made available, it might facilitate work.

Andrew

Minute Paper 4/8

Class went well today, we were very productive with our projects and figured out mainly what we are gonna put on our posters. I figure though that i need to work harder on my portion of the project since its a group effort. By Thursday, we will hopefully be almost done with the posters and also be down with the scenario and the text for the posters, but the group is good and we should do wonderfully on this project.

Minute Paper 4/8

Today was really productive for our group. We started out by sketching and drafting preliminary versions of our posters, which moved pretty quickly thanks to Tiffany’s artistic insights and our carefully drawn out plot of the future we are trying to portray. Once finished with that portion of the project we moved on to creating our slideshow. Once again starting with sketches we designed a short PowerPoint tutorial that will be presented with the posters creating what we hope will be an attention grabbing and thought provoking multi-media presentation.

Its production week and our group finalized our ideas to come up with an engaging artifact. The art students work collaborative in producing the artifact from the idea captured in our scenario. Now, what we come up so far are big posters with pictures that identify our collapsed media society. Since pictures worth a thousand words the pictures will get people focused and involved in our scenario. Second, we are doing flyers which will include the information in relation to the poster but in a more engaging and propaganda sense. Our last idea being crumble at the very last minute is a very entertaining and more conceptualized mental picture of our collapsed media society includes like a funeral. More in detail will produce later. This is what we come up and hopefully Thursday we stick to this and try to refresh our idea and bring it to the next level. We gathered some more ideas in which we would have finalized it before but it's great though because we have so far some solid artifacts that will bring forth the idea behind our scenario. I hope the best for everyone else's artifacts and how interesting and creative all ideas will be.

Project production..

So today we started on the production of our future artifact. Our group
was off to a rough start because we had a clash of ideas, but we were
able to find common ground with the art class. We may not be able to get
the vending machines that we orignally thought, but we will be able to
draw up a mock up setting to show everyone. I'm hoping to get the
machines though because it would an awesome idea! If not then I'll
settle for the mock up. Hope everyone elses projects are going smooth!

Today we finished up our ideas for the project and started to put it
all together. We r going to show a slide show and have some posters up
in the Campus Center so people walking by can easily see it. There r a
lot of people that walk in that area so hopefully we will get the
results that we want from this project. I am really excited to see how
our project turns out and also see how the rest of the projects. It
will be interesting to see all of the reactions that people will have
toward these projects

minute paper 4/8/08

Today in class we worked on our project again. At the beginning of class we were still divided and still trying to settle on a hard set idea that we aould all go with. After class deliberations we finally started to communicate all of our ideas into a more focused direct concept. I feel that we are doing well, and our project should make the kind of impact and thinking invoke.

My group is slowly and chaotically coming together. I really like all of our ideas we have so many it was hard to just choose one or two but the ones we are going forward with will really make an impression with our message we are trying to get across. The art students are really creating powerful imagines and it is much more than I expected. I am excited to see everyone Else's work and ideas they came up with.

Today we designed the art and text that we are going to put onto
magnets. Our group has come up with a lot of great ideas, and I can't
wait to see it finished. We also created a website that tells about
what our class is doing. We found a company that will print our magnets
and we will have the web address on them. We also came up with an idea
for a short video/commercial we are going to make and then put on
youtube.com. We will have a link on our website that takes you to this
video. I'm really happy with the way our group is meshing. Our two art
students are kicking ass. I'm looking forward to thursday.

the project is doing well. It is progressing very nicely. I can not

all fit together.

Today was my first day back in two weeks because of traveling for baseball.  It was an exciting class becasue i got to see what our project was and i was really excited with what my group has come up with.  I feel like i need to do the majority of the rest of the work though because of my absence to the group because i was traveling for baseball.  Today was a great class and i look forward to getting back into the group on thrusday.

we are finally at the production stages of our found futures project,
and it's definitely crunch time. i'm actually finding the productions
aspect of the process to be quite challenging because there are so many
things to think about. not only do our artifacts have to be practical,
but they also have to be functional, accessible, aesthically pleasing,
and intriguing. my group have decided to take on quite a few different
approaches. we are going to make magnets to put on cars, a website,
campaign propoganda, and also a commercial to be posted on the web;
it's definitely a lot to take on, but i know we can do it, and it will
just make our project that much better. i'm excited and apprehensive,
and i just hope that the final project is something we can all be proud
of.

Our futures class is the shizzzy those computers in there are fantastic although the one i was using was a little slow on the email side but nevertheless i got through. Energy and media, two completely different topics but yet so close together when you look at  the future of one another. I got Energy so ya'l  know im going to come correct for the mother earth. But seriously, The future of of our energy crisis is changing the world around us with gas prices sky rocketing our society is going to have to find better more affordable ways of using energy thats why solar energy and hydrogen cells are probably not that far away from being used in everyday life could you imagine an ipod or cell phone you never had to plug in.  Or a car  that only needed to be refueled every month man  i think the future is going to be crazy and exciting.

new people every time i go to class, it's hard to get use to lol. When I went to class, I was able to feel the energy of enthusiasm from many people. Many of us were very into this project. What i liked more was that Art students are very cool and they were more eager to make things, help us with ideas and everything. I didn't think they will be so into it like us too. Our group worked on the project we had in our hands and made it more detailed so that we may have our each part to work on and put it together later. I want to see how this will turn out to be like. We decided to talk more about it on next class so hopefully we finish everything by then.

What a change of scenery.  I enjoyed Thursday's class, we got tons done!  I missed Tuesday and was kind of out of the loop, but my group members brought me back up to date and I have to say that I love our groups scenario!  It'll be fun to actually start the constructing of our artifacts next week; I think that our artifact will make a huge impact on the people who come across it.  Looking forward to next week!

Let the project begin!

So we are now in the final planning stages of our project and I'm pretty
confident we will be able to pull this off. I'm quite excited and hoping
we are able to gain access to a vending machine and be able to see
people's reaction to our bizaare item from the future. I'm also excited
to see the other groups' project in action as well. The upcoming weeks
will certainly be entertaining ones!

Minute Paper (04-03-08)
We finally have a solid compelling scenario of media collapse. Ideas were throwing in to complete our scenario and we still have some finishing touch to do. Listening in more detail of what other groups are doing is very interesting like the one idea on the capsule. I cannot wait on the production week. I think that all the ideas sound detail and now in order for it to be more realistic is engaging through the right audiences to convey the message behind each scenario. I don't have much to say but I will work together with my group to get our project done. Everybody did a great job today. Like I said from the beginning, this class is very challenging and exciting at the same time, especially our mystery final presentation for the class.

Minute Paper 4/3

One thing that really caught my attention in class, in particular during the discussions at the end of each of the group ideas was how simultaneously ridiculous and reasonable some of the ideas, especially for the media groups, seemed to be. One in particular that stood out to me was one talking about (I believe it was the discipline group) something along the lines of rationing of media based on physical health. While it might seem to many a denial of freedoms many expect, my first thought was what a great and practical solution to the problem of obesity it would be, assuming a simple and fair method actually could be devised to analyze physical health prior to media access. Another thing that struck me was the variety of presentation models, from newspaper adds to looking to set up a fake vending machine for the hypothetical product/technology.

Andrew

Minute Paper 4/3

Today in class, we were able to make up our scenario for our presentation, which was interesting since it was fictional, but i do have to say that Hannah is quite good at it. I can tell that this project will go well and we will be able to finish it while still having fun.

Minute Paper 4/3

First of all I just want to say that it thought that there where some really interesting ideas presented by the different groups today. Now in regards to my group, I must say that I was kind of surprised at how our concept was portrayed in today’s presentation. Up until this point I had thought we where creating a future in which the government was taking our rights away simply to pave the way for some kind of dictatorship with the idea of their taking control of the media to protect us acting as simply a weak excuse to the public for the governments actions, but obviously something got lost in translation.

Mark Alexander

Today

Today's class was really productive. Our group fully established the collapse , the change and most of our ideas on the media based society it has become from all of this is well on its way. Also, it was good to hear all the other groups and thier ideas. I really like the dream capsul idea, its interesting and so ourtragous but at the same time doesnt seem to all that impossible, I am really excited to see the future results.

minute paper 4/3

It was nice to finally get a final decision for our project together. It was a lot easier that we had one of our major group issues "flagged" (thanks Stewart and Scott) :-). Anywho, like I said, it was a lot easier working with a smaller group and I'm pleased with the results that we ended up with at the end of the class period. One of my group members (coughANDREWcough) came up with a great idea about a foreign documentary movie poster that i absolutely fell in love with. I'm excited to see how that's going to pan out. I'm also eager to see how the nuclear super-ferry poster is going to come to life. I love all the ideas that we came up with today. Keep it up group!

04.03.08

our group got a lot done today, we were able to write a comprehensive
sceanrio that i thought was pretty cool, compelling and cohesive. we
also come up with quite a few different options for engaging the
general public involving magnets, posters, a website, and campaign
propaganda. it was really wonderful to see everything come together and
i couldn't be happier with my group. we all inspired one another and
worked very, very well together; my favorite part is that everyone was
involved and everyone had input. it's finally down to crunch time, and
next we start with actual production.. its very exciting. i hope
everything turns out as we've envisioned it, and i really hope that we
are able to have an impact on socitey, regardless of the degree. my
only concern is the one week that we have to get it all done, but i'm
definitely optimisitc.

4/1 minute paper.... on 4/2 :-(

Yesterday's class was interesting to say the least. Trying to brainstorm some ideas for our project was a bit of a chore for our group, but I think that we're starting to come up with something good. It was difficult because some of our group members had different ideas and opinions about how and what we should portray through the art aspect. But in all, it was semi-productive. I am excited to see where our project is headed in the next class, as well as seeing what everyone else has in mind for their projects.

Minute Paper 4/1

We were very productive in class today. A good amount of brainstorming was done and figured how our project would go. On thursday, hopefully we will be able to figure out totally on how we are gonna present our project to the class.

04/01/08

Today during the class, I was kind of confused in the beginning because i missed out on last class before the spring break. When Stuart assigned me in to media continuation I was listening hard to catch up to what the group has come up with so far. The group decided to go on the direction of dream advertising. I think it's really good approach to the thing we are doing. My group got pretty much every outline done but the time wasn't enough to actually do anything with it. hopefully we get enough time to think of somethin nice to make this project memorable. I think it is great idea to have art students and political science students collaborate to make something happen. I never thought it will be fun like this. With help of the art students, we could definitely pull something off.
I don't know if it's gonna be amazing like how my group talked about or be more realistic and make it little bit more easier.

Minute Paper 4/1

Alright so today's class was our time to formulate our idea for our project. We kind of went in a circle with our ideas and then progressed forward, but we came to a general idea with what we wanted. Having media continuation proved to be a little difficult because we viewed it as mainly advertising. Which to me, is what media basically is. Media is used to get an idea across on different forms of medium. So what our group originally thought of was having name brand items all over our bodies. From there we kind of branched off into having advertisements in the bathrooms, like all along the walls and even in the toilet. I forgot what came after that, but we eventually came to the thought of having our dreams being used as a way to project advertisements while we sleep. I think the scenario we generated will prove to be one quite believable. We'll see what we come up with on Thursday!

04.01.08

today's class was really awesome... i feel as though i finally have a
clear idea of what is expected of us, and i'm excited to put everything
that we've learned to use. i love having a clear direction to be headed
in. i'm also really happy with my group, i feel like we had a really
good dialogue going today; we all kind of played off of each others
ideas and came up with a really good scenario. we also brainstormed
quite a few different approaches for engaging the general public and
disrupting their mental environment, and a few of them are really
promising and rather ambitious. i'm very curious to see what we'll
actually be able to get done given the time constraint. there were also
a couple of scenarios that the other groups came up with that sounded
interesting, and im looking forward to seeing all of the end results.
see you all thursday :o)

Minute paper 04-01-08

Our group discussed many different ideas about Media in a collapse
society. I started to question myself of how we are going to combine
all this great ideas but when Professor Stuart came to our group and
talked about the ideas we have so far then it looked more understanding
for me. Generating idea and combining very distinct interest was very
overwhelming for our group. Because at first everybody just happened to throw in all kinds of idea and not come to any sense on agreeing to one relating sets of idea and in my mind I was a bit confused. After a long deliberation we all agreed on one idea of how media looks like in the collapse society. The idea we have right now is specific enough to produce effective artifacts and reflect media in a bigger sense. I meant that it incorporates the use of media showing the essence to everyday communication. Now, it all makes sense and giving out the finish product of our scenario can be a challenge. Listening to all the groups' idea and scenarios they were interesting and exciting. It will all come down to delivering the message and influencing others to adapt in each futures.

minute paper 4-01-08

Today in class we discussed our "futures" projects in groups. I have the collapse situation regarding to the media. I still want to do the more intense collapse situation of air raids, leaflets, and strict media censorship of a foreign coutry such as china, rather than a more restorative form of this collapsed society.

THE FIRST OF APRIL>>WHATTTT

I really enjoyed today's class, it was exciting to create ideas about the future that seems so unrealistic but you never really know. I like the group I'm working in and I think that we are generating some great ideas and thoughts, also I think it is good the way we critique each others ideas and build off them to establish an all around concept or creation of the future in media. At first I was a little confused and worried to have the Media collapse because media is so diverse but over all I am glad because media is a major part of our everyday lives and the question brought up today which really stuck in my head was " how would we survive without the media" and that's hard to imagine because for our future we seem more technology and more media focus but like I said before you never know what could happen. Cant wait to see what the final of all projects. See you all Thursday.

minutemenapril108

Today's class was a bit exciting. My group is doing media continuation and we formulated an idea about Dream Advertising. Where we would offer possible customers to take our Dreamvision pills and they could experience a "second life" type world during their sleep. We would sell advertising space to companies for product placement and commercial time on Dreamvision. It was pretty captivating. I think we got off track a few times but what we ended up with is pretty good.

Andrew's Minute Paper 4/1

It seemed like this class pretty much nothing got accomplished. When we were split off into or respective groups, without a teacher hassling us and reminding us of the time frame of the class, we lost track of a time and ended up spending most of the class discussing the numerous potential approaches and views of a continuation future rather than simply deciding on what we were going to discuss and demonstrate to the class at the end of class in short today, and in an extended format at the end of the next class. It ended up feeling like, when crunch time came, an idea was picked at random from those we had discussed. It was nice to see that some of the groups were having, even if they didn't realize it, one of the same major issues we had had. It was commented that two of the different futures seemed to be overlapping, and proposing a similar or identical future scenario. This was one of the major issues my group seemed to be having, deciding what exactly constituted a continuation future without it become disciplined, transformational, or collapsed. I was further struck by the fact that this had been the very same problem I had had when trying to research or think up ideas over the break for the topic.

Minute Paper 4/1

Today was actually pretty intense, with our group’s discussion covering everything from science fiction to communism and ending up concluding with a conspiracy theory. Ultimately I think in our round about way we ended up being really productive. Even though we came to quite a few dead ends we also explored many different forms of displaying those ideas, which helped us to narrow down our theme and has also given us a plethora of possible ideas for the artistic direction we may take to convey our possible future.

Mark Alexander

mintue paper

the project we are doing is different from what i thought it would be.
But i love what we are doing. Ours is the transforming energy and i
think we have a really good group and good ideas. I can not wait to see
the end results .

Today the group that I am in, discipline/energy, had a really good
session of talking about the potiential future we are going to create.
We came up with the entire scenario, and came up with some really good
ideas concerning how we are going to present our future. We are going
to attempt to put together a few different ways of makeing the public
aware of our possible future. I hope that we have enough time to get
the main ideas that we have produced. I am pretty excited about the
drection our group is going in, and I can't wait to see what the rest
of your groups create.

Energy Continuation Future

So im kind of disappointed that I didn't get to do the project on sex. I think that would have been an interesting turn-out. But, I'm perfectly OK with doing the continuation of energy. That idea has the possibility of going anywhere and I am really excited to start collaborating with my fellow peers, and seeing what kind of ideas we can come up with together.

Here we go!

Project time!

Ok so I think we were supposed to update on this but I honestly don't
know. Better safe than sorry I guess.
Anyways our group is doing the continuation of media. With the
development of TiVo and Sirius Satellite Radio, commercials and those
forms of advertisements are out. Our group is planning on showing newer
methods that company may use in the near future in order to advertise
their products.

Media (Collapsed futures)

I know for one fact that using the collapased futures to interrelate
media and the first thing that comes to mind is dramatic scene. But
there a lot of things to be consider when producing such dramatic or
not at all close to dramatic scene. Most importantly is to get the
collapsed future of media idea around the audiences mind or how media
will looks like in a collapsed society affect many people's lives.
After doing my research on media, I personally came with the idea about
filmmaking. Here are some of the problems facing the director of a
filmmaking, Mr Filmmedia. There are a lack of equipment to shoot or
film a specific event (a headline on the news/topnotch)which are all
part of low-budget filmmaking. Second, there are a few numbers of
cameramen, newscaster and actors to make the film or news come to life.
Mr. Degenerator needs to hire new employees right away or his life
career is over. The filmmaking crew of Mr. Filmmedia are about to film
a low-budget film in Texas, USA which is set on Spain. Mr. Filmmedia is
willing to take money out of his own pocket to buy everything that is
needed for the film, with the help of the crew, if they offered to
help. They cannot afford to go to Spain, so they filmed in Texas. This
is the brainstorm of how I picture this scenario. But I will take this
idea to my group and work things together.

Energy-Transformation

I am not sure what direction we are going in for sure. I thought energy such as gas would be more interesting.
For example, the elimination of gas because it is so expensive and the new future's way of dealing without it.
If not, then the idea of a watch that can power things just by touching it sounds good. Maybe we could try to
make an advertisent for it.

media...transformation?

Right, so I'm fairly excited about our big futures, art project! Although I have no idea what my group will do with our topic I'm hoping we'll do something that will be exposed to the outside, naive civilization. Maybe a futuristic website...I don't know like maybe all our homework will be able to be done on Myspace and Facebook one day because thats what most kids are on nowadays. I suppose I only found one slightly relevant article on the prediction of change in media broadcasting at http://medialabeurope.org/news/PR/2002.11.25-RadicalChanges.pdf. Hope thats alright for now...I'm excited to touch base with my group tomorrow to be inspired to seek more ideas with a better grasp for what we're aiming for!

energy [discipline]

As broad of a topic as energy is, I think my group has many options when it comes to creating a scenario for a disciplinary future.  For one, our scenario could be of a select source of energy that is designated as the "go-to" source.. for example, fossil fuels could be banned (or perhaps used up?) and we rely strictly on mcdonald's fast food grease.  every car is now green & powered by fast food chain waste.  in the winter you have to heat your house using grease..that would be nauseating!  or maybe ever household or citizen will have a set amount of gallons of gas they can use per week.  rationed energy.  very interesting.  we'll see how things go in class tomorrow.

group: energy discipline

i must say that the overlapping categories of future scenarios is quite
tricky. i have been doing some research on energy and it's possible
futures and have come up with a few vague ideas that my group and i
might be able to work with. when considering a future based on a
disciplined use of energy, i see two possibilities: either we set up
restrictive guidelines for the use of our current form of energy, or we
impliment and expand on more sustainable forms and make them
requirements. the second of two seems borderline 'transformation,'
however it seems as though with the right twist, it may also work for
discipline. i haven't been able to brainstorm much with my group
members, but i'm sure meeting with them tomorrow and getting the
dialogue going will certainly help to broaden and expand on the ideas
that we've all come up with.

Control In the Media

Considering that my group has been assigned control in the media as our future scenario it would seem that we will be looking at censoring. With this being said, the general concept I came up with for my groups project is to create something like a poster that attempts to disguise the governments heavy control of the media as something meant to protect us and to make our lives more enjoyable.

The Collapse of Energy

I guess for our project we have to pick a form of energy and show how it would collapse and make sure that it won't conflict with any of the other futures. Since the group picked oil as energy and chose to either say that we run out of it, or that we lose access to it. I think that the most effect that could happen is if we fully run out of oil. The scenario of losing access isn't really logical for the U.S. since its such a huge power and they would either pay for it to be imported, or fight for it like the most recent war. Even though, a picture of a number of oil wells burning from the war, would be pretty impactful.

spring break minute paper

I saw this movie over the break at the dollar theater. The movie was called "cloverfield." The movie started off hunky dory, until there was ome rumbling in the background, and all of the sudden the head of the statue of liberty came barreling into downtown manhattan. This part scared the shit out of me. As you can imagine the whole city was in a collapse like situation almost immediately. Collapse is my topic pertaining to the media. There were displays of media and communication and lack thereof in this movie. Anyways it brings up the whole idea of leaflets of forms of media, as well as helicopters acting as sheep dogs to corral ,communicate, and control mass populations of people. I would like to use the leaflet idea that contained outrageous foreign propaganda.

Project Ideas

I find that I have trouble figuring out the exact direction that the Energy (Continuation) future should go without it risking overlapping with other energy futures. As I see it, the possible views of continuation are as follows: 1, continuing our fuel consumption until we run out, intersecting with the collapse future; or 2, finding a new resource that can be exploited in the way current fuels are, intersecting with the transformation to a degree. Of course, one could instead focus the effects of the continuation of our energy use habits, rather than trying to figure out the details of exactly how the energy use had continued. By that logic, the image of the future could be less focused on the actual fuel consumption, but rather focus on the destruction wrought upon the environment by our excessive and environmentally unfriendly energy use. This train of thought in turn inspired an idea for a futures project focusing on the technology necessary for people to survive and go about normal live in spite of the environmental degradation caused by our energy use. But I am not sure if this would end up being too far from the intended focus of the project.

Minute Paper 3/20

Class was very entertaining today since we were picking our groups for our project, and finding out our topics for the project. It was entertaining since it took so long, hahaha. I finally go paired into the collapse of energy with a wonderful group of ladies, so i gathered in the 10 minutes i was talking with them, and i believe that this presentation will go smoothly and successful. Have a good break folks

Media (3-20-08)

After a long way of voting for the best two topics we finally came to
the bottom line of the exciting and challenging project ahead of us.
Even though media is not my comfort but to work in a group by gathering
information I guess its going to be okay. When our group started
brainstorming we focused on the bigger picture which confused everybody
but then when we asked Stuart our group kind get the narrow idea of how
our scenario will looks like. Our future is the collapsed scenario of
the media. We exchange our email so that during spring break we will
send each other our ideas of how our scenario is going to be and put
things together into a complete collapsed futures of the media. Like I
mentioned above this project is going to be challenging for me and at
the same time, fun and exciting. Hope everyone a safe and sound spring
break. Looking forward to release the hotness in this project.

Minute Paper 3/20

And soooo it begins..

well today's class marks the start of our project of future studies.  I'm definitely looking forward to getting this thing rolling and I can't wait to see the ideas the other groups have came up with.  I was surprised to see the vast amount of topics that the two classes came up with!  38 different topics! lol damn..it was quite funny too on how we had a short list..and a short short list.  The final 9 or 8 was made up with some very important topics but the final two were fine choices I think.  I'm hoping that the project will go through smoothly and also have a big impact on those it will effect.  have a great spring break everyone!

minute paper 3-20

Today in class we republicly elected 2 issues energy and media. Originally i felt i got stuck with media, however, after a quick clarification with stuart, i think i got a pretty good grasp on this collapse theory of the media. About the readings, i felt that Lasn was the type of guy who would put a death threat on my gas guzzling SUV, or be associated with the bombing of an abortion clinic. Ramos was an advocate of a more subtle and less radical approach to culture shock, and did not promote a "by any means necessary" mentality. I feel that keeping it clean, just and moral is necessary in order to keep clear of the guerilla warfare that Ramos promotes.

minute paper [20 mar]

today we brainstormed topics for our projects and voted on the two that we wanted to work with. there were tons of ideas as the class is so diverse. it took a while to vote, in the end media and energy were our two issues; they are both such broad topics that you really can't go wrong.
it was great to finally meet in our groups. i'm looking forward to getting this project started!

Again the future is something that is unknown but making predictions helps others draw away from unwanted outcomes of the future.  with our new projects i think we should be able explain all of possible futures. The magnitude of different ideas is a little difficult but thats the reason why we get more than on class session. choosing those futures was hillarious watching everybody agree and disagree. hahahaha crazyyyyyyy

topic received... wahoo

alright... i am pretty stoked on this project. its fun involving new people to our set of active minds! hopefully over break we'll all have time to do some researching about our topics. also, i can't believe that i was assigned collapse. i have had post collapse scenarios every single time we have had a futures project to work on. i was even given the collapse post-hurricane postcard at the beginning of the semester. i am pretty sure i am doomed. thats just a thought. good luck info-hunting everyone!

Minute Paper 3/20

I must admit that I was more than a little sad that we removed population from the list even though it was four votes in the lead, but I guess that’s the way it goes. Anyways, I’m glad that the guidelines are set and the groups are decided so that we can focus on our projects. I do have one question though Stuart, are we mostly being graded on how our art projects come out or how we present our art in public?

Oh, and as a side note to Michelle and Hannah, wow I can’t believe how stupid I’ve been for taking that route out of school, five seconds after talking to you I broke out laughing at myself, so thanks for pointing out that I was seriously wasting my time =)

Andrew's Minute Paper 3/20

One important question that was asked in class that it seemed was sort of dismissed by the instructors today was a question as to who our intended audience was. The question as to whether we were aiming for on campus or broader for this project when it came to voting for topics seemed to be brushed aside. However, I feel that it was an important question, because one of the most fundamental concepts of advertising, which is what we are doing in a fashion, is to know your target consumer. From that both our product and method should be determined. Fortunately, the class chose to vote for topics of more universal enough for the broader audience, but still leaving the option of a more focused approach.
On a similar vein, there was the Ramos reading for class. In much the same way, futures studies and information need to follow that same advertising model, of trying to adapt the commercial for the target consumer, as it were. We must avoid being like some of the articles relating to the futures, in which it is viewed from an entirely clinical viewpoint.

minute paper 3/20

Class today was pretty amusing. From deciding on topics to consolidating and eliminating (I'm pretty mad about SEX being consolidated and then wrongfully taken off the list) it was a funny process. Finally, we got to see who we would be working with. I'm excited to start the project and turn some heads around campus.

Minute Paper 3/20

Today's class was necessary but really boring. I do not care what the domain for the project is so I was not interested in voting or making suggestions. I think we should've spent more time on brain-storming with our groups rather than taking that much time to find two topics. I'm sure not everyone feels the same way, but I would be fine with being assigned a domain because I think it is easier. It saves time if we are given the situation because then we do not have to figure out what exactly we want to do with this broad topic. After we figure out our exact topic, then we have to figure out exactly what direction we want to go in. This all takes time that we do not really have. Well I hope our group can be productive over the break and when we come back so we are ready for Thursday and I hope the same for all of the other groups

3/18/08

On Wednesday, We went over the concepts and project we talked about in many previous classes. Stuart retold the stories of all those amazing experiences polisci class conducted at Chinatown. Which got some awes and concerns. It's perfectly understandable if somebody has concerns about that kind of experiments because It could actually cause more trouble then what we actually expect to have. However It's all good because It's really carefully thought out and try to minimize the damage. I'm looking forward to get this thing started when I comeback from Spring Break.

minute paper

yesterday was pretty much a review of what we have already been doing, as well as an introduction to the upcoming project. I really like the idea of arifacts from the future, these artifacts make it easier for us to realize or make real these potential futures, by having a tangible piece of evidence "from the future" then photographing it "in time and place" it makes the future a part of history thus much easier to swallow as if a true fact.

Minute Paper 3/18

I don't know why i didn't do this right after class yesterday, but i didn't and i'm doing it now. Class yesterday was pretty boring since we went over things that we've gone over before, but i'm still lost on what we are really doing for our project. I guess that we will find out thursday probably and hopefully i can think of something good to do for it.

i never realized how many psych majors we have in our class. do they
tell everyone in the psych department to head on over to the polisci
department? maybe the psych dep is pawning off students... just a
theory.
i am really excited about the project we are working on because it
will be great to get another new point of view from the design majors
of community members in the pacific new media class. i am curious if
we are going to pick our own groups or if they will be assigned to us.
either way it should be fun. i hope that we can come up with some
really fresh ideas to actually install or distribute. not only are we
getting a chance to express our political opinions through potentially
beautiful means, but we also get to actually show people. i feel like
great art of all kinds is made everywhere all the time but either the
makers don't share it or the viewers don't get a chance to see or
experience it.
anyways, this project will hopefully be a mind expanding experience.

Andrew's Minute Paper 3/18

In a way, I find I have trouble finding anything worthwhile to mention regarding class today because, for the most part, it was a review for us (while new for the art students). However, I did find that actually meeting the group and taking the first step in the project in the process acted as a sort of catalyst for ideas for the project. As we re-watched the videos, I started thinking about presentational and conceptual ideas from some of the examples that could be incorporated into the project. What probably stood out most in my mind was the sheer variety of approaches. Would a brochure or pamphlet from a future scenario be best, or an image, or an artifact?
Another thing that I hadn't really noticed before, but that also got me think, was that there has been a kind of focus on the negative futures, giving me a goal of presenting a positive future for this project.

Minute paper [18 mar]

It was great to finally get more information on what we will be doing for our project with the art students. Going over some of the examples of "artifacts" in class today refreshed my memory on how important it is to stimulate ideas so that people start seriously thinking about the future. I am really looking forward to getting together on Thursday so further discuss this project. I think that it will be a fun, new way to put our ideas into messages that could potentially have an impact on the community.

Minute paper(3-18-08)

Today's class we finally combined with the art class and listening to
the introduction gave the insights of some interesting background by
means of the different major from each individual in the art class. I
think the whole future jamming project is going to be exciting, fun and
helpful for both classes. I agreed with what you say that the art class
has their own part in contributing to the project and our class has our
view of what the project will come out. With the combination of two
strong classes, the ideas in formulating and putting out the project
will achieve successfully. It is also an innovative and distinctive way
to learn from the art class and vice versa. I am looking forward to
start the project and gather ideas for this intellectual scheme. We
also reviewed all the videos about the future and the art class gets to
see some of the examples of the future project you have been working on
already. I also think that this project will be a reasonable view of
what we've been always talked about in class on future jamming, since
we are going to make our own futurist project. It's going to be an
enjoyable hands-on experience for me.

03.18.08

i really enjoy hearing about all of the the projects
that the futures program has come up with; they are
all so creative and unique. it's going to be very
intertesting to see how our futures artifact
assignment plays out. i'm still totally unsure of the
exact details of the project, and so im a little
nervous. i think it's going to be quite a challenge to
come up with a novel idea that communicates a possible
future to the general public. i definitely want to
have some degree of impact on the community but i have
no idea what kind of message i want to convey or how
to do so. i hope we are given more direction on
thursday so that we are able to brainstorm over spring
break.

Minute Paper 3/18

Today was pretty much just a review of many of the concepts we have studied throughout the semester and meeting the art students we will be collaborating with. So overall there isn’t to much to report on today’s class, but I can say that I’m looking forward to finding out how everyone and everything will be arranged and seeing and hearing the different ideas that will come out of this project.

” Currently a 1kg, A5 sized subnotebook with a PCMCIA wireless modem can offer virtually all the functionality of a conventional PC. Simple PC functions and rudimentary Internet access are also available in handheld computers and personal digitalassistants that can be carried along in the pocket. Most mobile phones manufacturers are also working on integrating such functionality into their phones.

minute paper 3/18

It was nice to finally get to see some of the students we will be working with on our future artifact project. I think that seeing some of the videos again with the rest of the art class helped me to come up with some ideas and get a little bit more excited about the project as a whole. Im really looking forward to the next class where we start collaborating.

Better futures artifacts...

1. “On Target” Video Game Urinal

Set back into each urinal is a pressure-sensitive display, which activates an interactive game when used. This game includes sounds and images, bringing entertainment value to where you’d least expect. It will most likely will be installed in airports and schools “with the functional purpose of improving hygiene”. 6. Transparent Toaster

This innovative "Transparent Toaster" concept uses special heating glass to warm a single slice of bread. Unfortunately, the glass does not rach a high enough temperature -- at this time -- to actually toast the bread. No word yet on if this concept will go into production. [Source]

5. Origami DVD Player

This Origami DVD Player concept uses a fully-flexible display technology (e-paper) to ensure maximum portability. When not in use, the screen folds up neatly back into the case. From the image, it looks to sport integrated speakers as well. No word yet on if this concept will go into production.

4. Self Cooling Beer Can

Tempra Technology and Crown Holdings have partnered to develop the world's first self cooling beer can. It looks like a normal 500ml can, but features an integrated self-cooling device that reduces the "contents by a minimum of 30° Fahrenheit (16.7° C) in just three minutes."
