minute paper 2/11/08

Today in class we again talked about possible futures, and how there are about four main possible outcomes of our future based on the actions we take today. I liked the article by Jim Dator about De-colonizing the future, because it brought to light that we have already "colonized" the future and there are ideas already put in place of how the future will run. Without even knowing it, we as humans expect things to be a certain way without taking time to realize how these expectations got there. I think we should de-colonize the future, because we may discover many things that were not available in our common idea of the future.

but de-colonizing, does that mean we would have to sort of regress in society, in areas such as technical advances.

de-colonizing i don't think means regress. i think it entails more of reclaiming our own minds in a sense. de-colonizing the future is like keeping out minds open and not following anything blindly. technological advances may even aid in our efforts to open our minds... i.e. the internet. research is a hell of a lot easier than it used to be so now we can all educate ourselves instead of just believing what we hear.

ohh. okay. so just have more opportunity for our own thoughts rather then those placed there by politicians as an example
