Good night and good luck
Just as I asked my students to produce a Reflections paper at the end of our class, now that the summer is over I've made the time to post reflections of my own over at the sceptical futuryst. The post is aimed at anyone who may be interested -- futures studies and design educators in particular -- to learn from the experiment in future-jamming that we carried out together for the class.
Congratulations again, both to my students -- you guys were great -- and to our collaborators in the art class with which we worked, Beginning Digital Imaging 400, led by the exceptional Mr Scott Groeniger. I learned a great deal from you all.

that it made me very proud to be a part of this class and our future
jamming process. i was very impressed by different ideas and means used
to catch the attention of the general public, and i can say without a
doubt that our projects have definitely left an impact on a significant
number of people. my favorite project by far was Finneman Universal and
their "device free" concept. i thought that business card was very,
very effective and aesthiccally pleasing, it defintely looked ligit.
Thhe fact that it was practically text free definitely left a lot of
room for curiosty and interest, and i found it very compelling; it
looked very professional. I also thought it was genius to make it on a
business card because this allowed for the production of many, which
enabled them to reach more people. the website was also very well put
together and came out very nicely, and all in all i thought the whole
thing was very well thought out, from the logo creation to execution.
While this was my personal favorite, i think that every group had their
strong points and things that made thier project unique and powerful.
04.15.08
i thought my group and i would have to spend today making our magnets,
however, when i got to class i was delighted to learn that the art
students had already finsihed making them. that definitely saved us so
much time, and allowed us to get started on installation right away. i
had a wonderful time distributing aftifacts from our future around
campus. It was exciting to know that everything came together quite
seemlessly, and now was our chance to really reach the general public.
we were able to put almost all of our magnets on cars, only saving a
few for ourselves and the presentation. in the beginning we were more
focused on putting them on cars that consume more gas, like big trucks
and SUV's, but after awhile i started putting them on any car because i
thought that limiting our intending population would definitely bias
our results. David, on of our art students, works for Ka Leo and so we
went and talked to the editor and she loved the idea of featuring a
picture of our installation process in thursdays edition. i was really
excited about it because i know that our project would catch the
attention of a much wider audience then it would have otherwise. all in
all, it was a very successull day.

since we were prepping the posters and such. However looking at the
posters today, I'm sure we will get some crazy attractions. I'm hoping
that the pills will pull through later too so that we will have
something else to give out. Look out for our posters everyone! Dream

The thing that particularly stood out to me in the class proper once we reunited with the art class was how far we had traveled from out initial ideas of the project, focusing on traffic and highways, to wending back to energy and on into nuclear energy, finally coming once more into the domain of cars by virtue of the concept of the nuclear car.

of our artifacts is a magnet, and on this magnet we wanted to include a
web address so that the people who receive our magnets could find out
more information about our project and sceanrio. we already had the
website and the design for the magnet made, we just needed to find a
way to post our stie up on the web which is what we spent most of
todays class doing. because of this we weren't really able to do much
production today, however we already have all of our supplies and we
did a test run with the printer. now all we have left to do is add some
text to the website, assemble the magnets and then distribute them, as
well as some preparation for our presentation. One of our group members
has also decided to take it upon himself to create a short commercial
for our fictional business (much love to Adam :o), so if all goes well
that will be posted on our website also. i'm really looking forward to
actually putting the magnets on cars, and seeing what kind of response
we get. im going to put my email address on the website so that if
anyone has comments or wants to respond they'll have a way to do so.
i'm really enjoying this opportunity to engage the other people in what
we've been learning and i think it's awesome that all of our groups get
to go public with their ideas.

One thought occurred to me about how to improve the project if it is to be continued in subsequent semesters. I found in class today that is was somewhat challenging to work in the room due to both crowding and noise concerns. It seems that, if either a larger or second computer room were made available, it might facilitate work.

Its production week and our group finalized our ideas to come up with an engaging artifact. The art students work collaborative in producing the artifact from the idea captured in our scenario. Now, what we come up so far are big posters with pictures that identify our collapsed media society. Since pictures worth a thousand words the pictures will get people focused and involved in our scenario. Second, we are doing flyers which will include the information in relation to the poster but in a more engaging and propaganda sense. Our last idea being crumble at the very last minute is a very entertaining and more conceptualized mental picture of our collapsed media society includes like a funeral. More in detail will produce later. This is what we come up and hopefully Thursday we stick to this and try to refresh our idea and bring it to the next level. We gathered some more ideas in which we would have finalized it before but it's great though because we have so far some solid artifacts that will bring forth the idea behind our scenario. I hope the best for everyone else's artifacts and how interesting and creative all ideas will be.
Project production..
was off to a rough start because we had a clash of ideas, but we were
able to find common ground with the art class. We may not be able to get
the vending machines that we orignally thought, but we will be able to
draw up a mock up setting to show everyone. I'm hoping to get the
machines though because it would an awesome idea! If not then I'll
settle for the mock up. Hope everyone elses projects are going smooth!

and it's definitely crunch time. i'm actually finding the productions
aspect of the process to be quite challenging because there are so many
things to think about. not only do our artifacts have to be practical,
but they also have to be functional, accessible, aesthically pleasing,
and intriguing. my group have decided to take on quite a few different
approaches. we are going to make magnets to put on cars, a website,
campaign propoganda, and also a commercial to be posted on the web;
it's definitely a lot to take on, but i know we can do it, and it will
just make our project that much better. i'm excited and apprehensive,

society. I started to question myself of how we are going to combine
all this great ideas but when Professor Stuart came to our group and
talked about the ideas we have so far then it looked more understanding
for me. Generating idea and combining very distinct interest was very
overwhelming for our group. Because at first everybody just happened to throw in all kinds of idea and not come to any sense on agreeing to one relating sets of idea and in my mind I was a bit confused. After a long deliberation we all agreed on one idea of how media looks like in the collapse society. The idea we have right now is specific enough to produce effective artifacts and reflect media in a bigger sense. I meant that it incorporates the use of media showing the essence to everyday communication. Now, it all makes sense and giving out the finish product of our scenario can be a challenge. Listening to all the groups' idea and scenarios they were interesting and exciting. It will all come down to delivering the message and influencing others to adapt in each futures.

Media (Collapsed futures)
media and the first thing that comes to mind is dramatic scene. But
there a lot of things to be consider when producing such dramatic or
not at all close to dramatic scene. Most importantly is to get the
collapsed future of media idea around the audiences mind or how media
will looks like in a collapsed society affect many people's lives.
After doing my research on media, I personally came with the idea about
filmmaking. Here are some of the problems facing the director of a
filmmaking, Mr Filmmedia. There are a lack of equipment to shoot or
film a specific event (a headline on the news/topnotch)which are all
part of low-budget filmmaking. Second, there are a few numbers of
cameramen, newscaster and actors to make the film or news come to life.
Mr. Degenerator needs to hire new employees right away or his life
career is over. The filmmaking crew of Mr. Filmmedia are about to film
a low-budget film in Texas, USA which is set on Spain. Mr. Filmmedia is
willing to take money out of his own pocket to buy everything that is
needed for the film, with the help of the crew, if they offered to
help. They cannot afford to go to Spain, so they filmed in Texas. This
is the brainstorm of how I picture this scenario. But I will take this
idea to my group and work things together.

energy [discipline]
group: energy discipline
tricky. i have been doing some research on energy and it's possible
futures and have come up with a few vague ideas that my group and i
might be able to work with. when considering a future based on a
disciplined use of energy, i see two possibilities: either we set up
restrictive guidelines for the use of our current form of energy, or we
impliment and expand on more sustainable forms and make them
requirements. the second of two seems borderline 'transformation,'
however it seems as though with the right twist, it may also work for
discipline. i haven't been able to brainstorm much with my group
members, but i'm sure meeting with them tomorrow and getting the
dialogue going will certainly help to broaden and expand on the ideas
that we've all come up with.

Media (3-20-08)
the bottom line of the exciting and challenging project ahead of us.
Even though media is not my comfort but to work in a group by gathering
information I guess its going to be okay. When our group started
brainstorming we focused on the bigger picture which confused everybody
but then when we asked Stuart our group kind get the narrow idea of how
our scenario will looks like. Our future is the collapsed scenario of
the media. We exchange our email so that during spring break we will
send each other our ideas of how our scenario is going to be and put
things together into a complete collapsed futures of the media. Like I
mentioned above this project is going to be challenging for me and at
the same time, fun and exciting. Hope everyone a safe and sound spring
break. Looking forward to release the hotness in this project.

On a similar vein, there was the Ramos reading for class. In much the same way, futures studies and information need to follow that same advertising model, of trying to adapt the commercial for the target consumer, as it were. We must avoid being like some of the articles relating to the futures, in which it is viewed from an entirely clinical viewpoint.

either way it should be fun. i hope that we can come up with some

getting a chance to express our political opinions through potentially

the introduction gave the insights of some interesting background by
means of the different major from each individual in the art class. I
think the whole future jamming project is going to be exciting, fun and
helpful for both classes. I agreed with what you say that the art class
has their own part in contributing to the project and our class has our
view of what the project will come out. With the combination of two
strong classes, the ideas in formulating and putting out the project
will achieve successfully. It is also an innovative and distinctive way
to learn from the art class and vice versa. I am looking forward to
start the project and gather ideas for this intellectual scheme. We
also reviewed all the videos about the future and the art class gets to
see some of the examples of the future project you have been working on
already. I also think that this project will be a reasonable view of
what we've been always talked about in class on future jamming, since
we are going to make our own futurist project. It's going to be an
enjoyable hands-on experience for me.
